Nissan GT-R LM Nismo

A bold LMP1 prototype with an unconventional front-engine front-wheel-drive design created to challenge the established hybrid dominance at Le Mans.

In the long and occasionally absurd history of endurance racing, engineers have always been tempted by the same dangerous idea: what if we ignored convention entirely?

In 2015 that question escaped the laboratory in the form of the Nissan GT-R LM Nismo, an LMP1 prototype that challenged the dominant design philosophy of modern endurance racing.

While rivals from Audi, Porsche and Toyota relied on mid-engine hybrid layouts, Nissan engineers led by Ben Bowlby attempted something radically different: a front-engine, front-wheel-drive Le Mans prototype.

The car used a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing around 500 horsepower driving the front wheels through a sequential gearbox. Its ambitious hybrid system was intended to capture braking energy and deploy it through electric motors powering the rear axle, briefly turning the car into an all-wheel-drive machine during acceleration.

The design also reversed traditional tyre proportions, using extremely wide front tyres and narrower rears to maximise traction at the driven wheels while reducing aerodynamic drag.

The GT-R LM Nismo made its competitive debut at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans. However, development challenges meant the hybrid system was not fully operational during the race, leaving the car to compete largely on combustion power against rivals producing far greater combined hybrid output. Driven by racers such as Marc Gené, Michael Krumm and Jann Mardenborough, the car nonetheless captured attention for its unusual proportions and daring engineering philosophy.

Although the programme ended early, the GT-R LM Nismo remains one of the most fascinating experimental prototypes of modern endurance racing, remembered for its willingness to question established design norms.
