Porsche 992 GT3 RS 2024

The 992 GT3 RS does not chase the wind — it bends it into submission and uses it to carve the road.

At 285 km/h, a 2024 Porsche 911 GT3 RS produces 860 kg of downforce. This is an amusing figure because 860 kg is roughly the weight of an entire small car, except here it is invisible and trying very hard to squash your Porsche into the Nürburgring.

The 992-generation GT3 RS appeared in 2022, but by the 2024 model year its purpose was already perfectly clear. Porsche had stopped developing a road car that occasionally visited circuits and started developing a racing car whose number plates prevented an awkward conversation with the police. Andreas Preuninger's GT department looked towards the 911 RSR and GT3 R, then apparently decided aerodynamics should no longer be considered polite decoration.

The result is dominated by that enormous rear wing, but the cleverness begins much further forward. Porsche abandoned the normal 911's front luggage compartment and installed a large central radiator instead, derived from the RSR. This freed space on either side for active aerodynamic elements. The front and rear wings work together, while a Formula 1-style DRS system can flatten elements at the press of a steering-wheel button. There are adjustable vanes beneath the car, aero-shaped suspension arms and vents seemingly everywhere. At this point even the bits holding the wheels on have become aerodynamicists.

At 200 km/h the RS generates approximately 409 kg of downforce, twice that of the previous 991.2 GT3 RS. At 285 km/h it reaches that extraordinary 860 kg figure. Rather wonderfully, Porsche also gives the car an airbrake: under emergency braking, the active wings stand upright to create additional drag. Apparently enormous carbon wings are allowed to become even more enormous when frightened.

Behind all this aviation equipment remains one of Stuttgart's finest engines: a 3,996 cc naturally aspirated flat-six producing 525 PS at 8,500 rpm and 465 Nm at 6,300 rpm, revving to 9,000 rpm. There are individual throttle bodies, motorsport-derived solid cam followers and new camshafts. A seven-speed PDK sends everything rearwards through shorter gearing than the regular GT3.

Zero to 100 km/h takes 3.2 seconds, while maximum speed is 296 km/h. That is actually slower than a normal GT3, which is rather magnificent. Porsche sacrificed top speed for downforce because the GT3 RS is interested in how quickly you arrive at the next corner, not whether your dinner-party statistic begins with a three.

At 1,450 kg DIN, it remains remarkably light considering the machinery involved. Carbon-fibre reinforced plastic appears in the doors, front wings, roof and bonnet. Specify the Weissach Package and Porsche adds further carbon components, including anti-roll bars and coupling rods. Magnesium wheels can remove another eight kilograms, presumably at a price capable of removing considerably more from the owner.

The chassis is just as obsessive. Double wishbones sit at the front, multi-links behind, with rear-wheel steering and suspension settings adjustable from rotary controls on the steering wheel. Even rebound and compression damping can be changed independently while driving. A normal 911 gives you a steering wheel. This gives you something approaching mission control with indicators.

Then came the Nürburgring. Jörg Bergmeister drove the 20.8-kilometre Nordschleife in 6:49.328 despite cool asphalt and strong winds. The figure matters, but the way the RS achieved it matters more. This 911 does not simply use horsepower to bully a circuit into submission. It manipulates air.

That is what makes the 992 GT3 RS unique in the 911 bloodline. Earlier RS models stripped away weight and sharpened the road car. This one fundamentally changed the relationship between road-going Porsche and racing machine.

Signature Line: the GT3 RS is no longer a 911 with a wing; it is a wing that happens to have a 911 underneath.

And perhaps that is its greatest significance. The 911 began life as a small sports car whose engine was famously installed in the wrong place. Sixty years of German stubbornness later, Porsche has turned that peculiar architecture into one of the most sophisticated aerodynamic road cars ever built. Progress is funny like that.
