Spark SRT05E G2

Spark's Gen2 transformed Formula E with full-race battery endurance, striking bodywork and manufacturer-developed powertrains, turning electric racing's early compromises into a sharper contest of speed and strategy.

Halfway through an early Formula E race, the driver used to abandon one perfectly respectable racing car and climb into another. It was an ingenious solution to a battery problem, but not an ideal advertisement for convenience. The Spark SRT05E, better known as Gen2, made that peculiar choreography unnecessary.

Introduced for the 2018/19 season, it gave electric racing a shape that looked determined to escape the usual single-seater family photograph. Sweeping bodywork surrounded much of the wheels, and a halo framed the cockpit. Subtle it was not. For a championship trying to establish its own identity, that was rather the point.

Spark built the common platform, working within the FIA's technical framework, while manufacturers supplied their own powertrain solutions. The shared exterior therefore concealed genuine engineering competition. Motor, inverter, software and transmission choices mattered beneath broadly identical silhouettes. Apparently, individuality did not require everyone to bring a different nose.

The launch specification allowed 250 kW at maximum output and 200 kW in normal race mode, with 54 kWh available from the battery. Official performance figures were 2.8 seconds to 100 km/h and a 280 km/h maximum. More important than either number was the ability to complete the race in one car. Progress had acquired the unexpectedly modest form of staying seated.

At a minimum 900 kg including the driver, Gen2 was no featherweight. Its battery alone accounted for 385 kg in the launch specification. Regenerative braking made slowing down part of the energy strategy rather than merely the unfortunate interval between accelerations. The brake pedal now had something useful to contribute to the next straight.

On city circuits, this changed the driver's problem rather than removing it. Completing the distance was possible; spending energy intelligently remained essential. ATTACK MODE added another tactical decision, trading a trip through an activation zone for extra power. The quickest route through a race was not always the shortest route through a corner.

Gen2 served Formula E through the 2021/22 season, with normal race power rising to 220 kW for that final campaign. It was a platform with a working life, not one immutable specification. That matters when reading its numbers: a launch figure describes the starting point, while a team's motor and a season's rules describe the car actually racing.

The SRT05E's greatest overtake was passing its own replacement car. By removing the mid-race swap, it let Formula E's contest look less like a demonstration with an intermission and more like a complete sporting proposition. Its legacy is not that it solved every electric-racing argument. It moved the argument forward, from whether the machinery could last to how cleverly a driver could use it.
